Morocco Reflection: Emily Benson

The 2018 HELM trip to Morocco was an amazing experience which I am so grateful to have had.  I learned so much more than I possibly could have imagined.  I was able to see and engage with how Christians live their lives in a predominantly Muslim country.  I was also able to witness how Christians dedicate much of their ministry to the migrant and refugee crisis happening in Morocco today.

During this trip I was so grateful to have the opportunity to worship with other Christians.  We had the chance to worship with two different churches while we were in Morocco, and I noticed a common theme in both.  As we entered these churches there was an immediate presence of love and gratitude. Even though the members of this church covered a wide range of beliefs, they all find a common place in worship.  They look at the church as a place that they can put aside their differences and celebrate their common love for God.

I found myself reflecting upon what privileges we have as Christians in the United States.  We are lucky enough to have freedom of faith and have no limits on sharing our faith and views with others.  Although they do have limits within their religious freedom in Morocco, their Christian churches are thriving.  In both churches that we went to, every single seat was filled up in the sanctuary and they even had to add extra seating in the isles and out the doors. It was inspiring to see such strong churches in a country where the Christian faith is the minority.

Another aspect of the trip that I find myself reflecting on is how the Christian Church in Morocco is so committed to working the migrants and refugees.  They tirelessly work with them and dedicate their ministry to this crisis.  One thing that stuck out to me is how they treat each migrant as an individual and allow them to keep their dignity.  They hear their individual stories and do what they can to help in each situation.  Their work ranges from giving them clothes and helping them to find shelter, to prayers for their safety.

Lastly, I would like to comment on what a beautiful country Morocco is.  Being an art major, this is especially meaningful to me. I found myself in awe at the architecture and beautiful views throughout this country.  Each building and structure displayed amazing detail and vivid colors.  We toured castles, went to the beaches, and walked around the medinas.  I had heard that Morocco was beautiful, but it definitely exceeded my expectations.
