The following scholarships are available to Ph.D. and D.Min. students through HELM:

William Gilbert and Florence Leonard Jones Scholarship is given annually to a full-time student pursuing the degree of Doctor of Philosophy who is either preparing for ordination in, or already ordained in, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and intends to provide leadership to a congregation or other agency of the church. Established through an endowment gift by an anonymous donor, this award aims to recognize and encourage outstanding Disciples preparing for ministry. It also provides a scholarship of $2,000. One student receives this scholarship each year.

Criteria:

  • Must be a member of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation.
  • Must submit a completed online application by the stated deadline of March 31, no exceptions.
  • Must be a full-time student in a Ph.D. program.
  • Must be preparing for ordination – or, already be ordained (with Standing) in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
  • Demonstrates intent to serve a congregation or other agency of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The Ann E. Dickerson Scholarship(s) are for female members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) working toward a Ph.D. degree in religious studies.  A special Higher Education and Leadership Ministries fund supports the Dickerson Scholarship, which honors former HELM Board member, Ann E. Dickerson. The Dickerson Scholarship can be awarded to multiple recipients per year.

Criteria:

  • Must be a member of a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
  • Must be a female candidate.
  • Must submit a completed online application by the stated deadline of March 31, no exceptions.
  • Must be working toward a Ph.D. in a religious studies field.
  • Must submit a two-page (maximum) summary of intended or current research.

The HELM Doctoral Book Scholarship(s) recognizes outstanding leadership among seminary students pursuing ministry within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or related entity. Students may apply with the recommendation of their regional minister or minister in current ministry setting, and a professor in the seminary of attendance. Grants are awarded in amounts up to $1,000 and may be used for tuition, fees, and/or educational materials. Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited theological institution in the year of application. Applicants must complete the online application form and submit a current transcript and recommendations.

Criteria:

  • Must be a member of a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
  • Must submit a completed online application by the stated deadline of March 31, no exceptions.
  • Must submit current transcript demonstrating academic potential to complete program.
  • Must submit a recommendation letter from a regional minister or minister in current ministry setting, and a professor in the seminary of attendance.
  • Demonstrates pursuing ministry within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or related entity.

The following scholarships are available to Ph.D. and D.Min. students through other ministries and institutions. If your institution would like to have a scholarship listed below, please use this link to fill out the posting request form.

Disciples Seminary Foundation (DSF) offers generous financial support for covenanted students at our three partner schools: Claremont School of Theology, Pacific School of Religion, and Iliff School of Theology. All Disciples and UCC students are eligible to apply for DSF financial assistance. Applicants will be asked to write a brief essay (2 pages) on two or three topics provided. A letter of recommendation from three references (Congregational minister,  Regional/Conference minister, college dean, professor or someone related to higher education) will need to be provided. The deadline is rolling until the quota has been met per academic year.

Criteria:

  • The applicant must be admitted to a graduate degree program at one of the DSF partner schools.
  • The applicant must be affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or the United Church of Christ.
