Meet former Disciples Leadership Institute participant Chesla Nichelson:
1) Where are you currently serving? Please share a bit about the work/ministry in which you are involved.
I serve as the Program Director and Merger Staff person with Disciples Women and National Convocation. In this role, my primary focus involves creating, sharing and being a resource for women and African Americans within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). You can learn more about Disciples Women at www.discipleswomen.org
2) What are some of your memories from your time in DLI?
The first image that comes to mind when I think of DLI is food. As we gathered with our various backgrounds and biblical interpretations, the bountiful tables had plenty of space and food for everyone. All were welcomed, embraced, and fed, both physically and spiritually.
3) What skills, experiences and/or knowledge did you gain by participating in DLI?
DLI expanded my exposure and understanding of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) immensely. My faith was deepened I gained lasting and meaningful relationships with people who love God, love the church, and fight for justice as their authentic selves.
4) In what ways has this participation shaped your understanding of ministry and, in particular, what it means to be a leader?
More than anything, ministry and being a leader is about listening; listening to God, listening to the Holy within one’s self and listening to the Holy in others. Listening is an act of love.
