Rev. Ronald J. Degges to serve as Interim President!

The Board of Directors of Higher Education and Leadership Ministries is excited to announce that the HELM Executive Committee has extended a call to the Rev. Ronald J. Degges to serve as Interim President!

In his role as Interim President, Rev. Degges will have operational responsibility for HELM’s staff and programs and will work with the Board of Directors to carry out our mission to work with wider church and higher education partners to develop and nurture Christian leaders who are transforming church, society, and the world.

Rev. Degges began his ministry with HELM on August 15, 2022.

Rev. Ronald J. Degges is gifted with a deep, joyous, articulate and always respectful-of-others faith that has been a constant inspiration to his parishioners, colleagues in ministry, and ecumenical and interfaith partners. Ron motivates and inspires people. He sees the qualities of others and taps into them, inviting and guiding them to contribute. He then helps them be successful. Through his nearly five decades in ministry serving churches in Maryland, Iowa, Delaware, Virginia, Indiana, and California, Ron has seen and experienced the Disciples from coast to coast.

Through his work with the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council, he has developed and hosted a series of interfaith discussions throughout Southern California and produced an interfaith film, “Putting Faith Into Action.” He has recently traveled to Turkey, Israel, Jordan, and Palestine to meet with Muslim, Christian, and Jewish leaders. He participated in a seminar on Contemporary Muslim Thought held at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and represented the Disciples at the Inaugural Institute on Religion and Civic Values event entitled, “Educating for Religious Freedom and Mutual Respect,” held at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

In his work with churches and interfaith groups, Ron articulates his vision, inspires the group to form a plan, encourages members to reach out of their comfort zones to participate in leadership and team roles. He encourages people to never settle for anything less than the best in their life, in their world, and in their universe.

Retiring after a productive decade as President of Disciples Home Missions in 2017, Ron re-entered active ministry in 2020-2021 to serve as Interim Senior Minister at Speedway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Speedway, IN.

Rev. Degges is a graduate of Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee and Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. His most recent publication is, “Fifty-four Years, Four Months, Seventeen Days: Relationships That Enhance Our Living.”

He lives in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife of thirty-six years, Deniese Ruth Degges, and is father of five children: Joshua, Randall, Joey, Hope and Michele. Joshua is married to wife, Brandy, with grandchildren, Wyatt and Dylan, and live in Houston, Texas. Randall and his wife, Samantha, and dog, Dandelion, live in Concord, California. Joey and his partner, Tiffany, live in Fairfield, California. Hope lives with husband, Paul, in Fairfax, Virginia. Youngest daughter, Michele, lives with her two dogs, Pumpkin and Goldilocks, in Sacramento, California.

HELM Board Spring Meeting Takes Place at Chapman University

In April of this year, HELM’s board of directors met at Chapman University in Orange, California for the Spring HELM board meeting. The meeting began on Friday afternoon with a tour of the Chapman University campus, led by Rev. Nancy Brink, Director of Church Relations.  Many of the board members had never visited the campus and were impressed by the growth in the programs offered, with a new 140,000 square foot Center for Science and Technology opening in the fall of 2018 and the establishment of a school of engineering, set to open in 2019 or 2020. Saturday’s portion of the meeting took place at the beautiful Fish Interfaith Center.  Board members were able to spend some time talking with Dr. Daniele Stuppa, President of Chapman University, as he talked about his vision for the future of Chapman.

The day concluded with a time of fellowship and worship with students and staff from the Disciples Seminary Foundation, located in nearby Claremont.  Worship was led by Tevita Uesi, an M.Div. student and HELM board member.  Rev. Clemette Haskins and Rev. HaeJin Park, both Ph.D. students and Ann E. Dickerson Scholars, spoke about their calling to ministry and higher education as well as the specific topics they are researching. Other students who participated included Leah Laird (Ph.D), Sarah Fiske-Philips (M.Div) and Toni Bond Leonard (Ph.D.).  All present were moved by the talents, calling and commitments of those who participated in worship and give thanks for the leadership they are already providing the church.

During the business session of the meeting, the board took two significant actions. Having previously called Chris Dorsey to the presidency for a transitional period of three years, the board voted to extend the call to Chris Dorsey to become the permanent president of HELM. This is an affirmation of the work that has been done over the past three years and a commitment to continue the important work of transforming HELM. The board also voted to enter a period of intentional discernment about the future of HELM to ensure that the mission of HELM continues in a way that meets the needs of the church in the present age.

Higher Education & Leadership Ministries Announces Relocation to Indianapolis
Move Allows for Increased Collaboration and Greater Financial Equilibrium

ST. LOUIS – Higher Education & Leadership Ministries (HELM), St. Louis, a General Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), has announced its plans to relocate to Indianapolis. HELM’s new office will be in the Disciples Center, home to the denomination’s Office of the General Minister & President, multiple General Ministries, and other denominational offices.

HELM focuses on developing and nurturing Christian leaders who are transforming church, society and world.

“This was not an easy decision for the board to make, given our connections to St. Louis, “ said Board President Tom Wood, “but from both a stewardship and mission standpoint, the board believes it is the right direction for our ministry.” HELM has been located in St. Louis since 1972. Prior to that HELM, as the Board of Education, was based in Indianapolis.

The move is the result of an evaluation by HELM’s executive leadership and board of directors regarding the facility needs of the organization in light of its mission priorities and program offerings. Relocating to Indianapolis will allow increased collaboration between HELM and wider church partners, while reducing overhead facilities and staffing costs.

“We give God thanks for all HELM has accomplished in its past and we look forward to the ministry yet to be done,” added the Rev. Chris Dorsey, HELM’s President. “As we go through a transitional period, we are doing everything possible to fulfill the mission and sustain our witness well into the future.”

HELM’s operations will be based in Indianapolis as of Aug. 1. For more details about HELM and its ministry please visit www.helmdisciples.org.
